Legend Bank held a public ground breaking ceremony on Thursday morning at the site of its upcoming Sherman branch to be built at Sherman Landing, a new development at the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 75 and FM 691.
Sherman Mayor David Plyler opened things up with a speech on how important the bank is to the new development.
“When it became clear the southwest corner of (Hwy.) 75 and (FM) 691 was primed to become a retail anchor of the city’s north side, we had to decide what to name this development,” Plyler said. “We decided on Sherman Landing because we know the importance of the North Texas Regional Airport is to our local economy. We know they are going to play an even more important role when Sherman continues to grow. We envision this corner benefiting Gateway Village across the street. That is why we were able to secure the area’s first convenience store, also Grayson County’s first QuikTrip, which should open to the public early next month.”
Plyler said he expects the Legend Bank location will allow the city to keep the momentum going in the area while providing what he called a tangible symbol of progress.
“It will be another important step in the evolution of this lively intersection,” Plyler said. “I know it’s going to be a beautiful facility once it’s completed. This corner is expanding and growing with construction on all sides. We’re particularly pleased they have chosen to be in Sherman.”
Matt Brown, president of the Sherman location for Legend Bank, said it was a really exciting time to bring a new store to the city he described as very welcoming.
“It’s always wonderful and amazing when you can come break ground in a new community, a community me and my wife have lived in for several years,” Brown said. “We’re really excited to have a new bank here in Sherman. The people are great. We moved here five years ago and were welcomed with open arms. Sherman is a growing community. Being welcoming and growing makes it a perfect fit for Legend Bank.”
Construction is expected to officially start next week once the weather clears up. Brown said it should take about nine to 12 months to complete the project. Legend Bank donated a check in the amount of $1,000 to United Way of Grayson County for North Texas Giving Day on Thursday morning as part of its groundbreaking ceremonies
The next closest Legend Bank is in Whitesboro on Highway 82. There are 10 locations in the state, with most along the U.S. Highway 82 corridor from Bonham to Wichita Falls.
Brown said the Sherman branch is expected to be 5,000-6,000 square feet with two drive-thru lanes and an ATM. He said with mobile banking being such an integral part of the modern banking experience, the company didn’t need too large of a facility.
