Two local restaurants received the lowest passing grades on their most recent inspection by the Grayson County Health Department.

The Grayson County Health Department rates restaurants and other establishments that serve food based on their adherence to codes set by the Texas Department of Health. Restaurants are given an “A,” “B,” “C” or “F” score. An “A” means sanitarians reported no or only a few minor violations. Those with a “B” were found to have several minor violations, but nothing major. Restaurants with a “C” might have a major violation or repeat offenses, but in the inspectors’ opinions, nothing bad enough to warrant an “F.” An “A” means sanitarians reported 10 or fewer demerits. Those with a “B” received 11-20 demerits. Restaurants with a “C” had 21-30 demerits and restaurants with “F” ratings received more than 30 demerits.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill on Texoma Parkway in Sherman and Napoli’s Italian Restaurant in Van Alstyne are the two that received the “C” grades.

At Applebee’s, refrigeration was a problem. The inspection report noted that the refrigeration unit under the grill was not keeping things cold enough.

“The cook stated they knew the cooler were out, but (they) put ice on top of the different meats,” the report said.

Those meats, the cook told the inspector, had been placed in that fridge hours earlier. It was all moved to a working walk-in cooler, the report said. The staff was admonished not to store potentially hazardous food in that broken cooler until it is repaired. The report also said the staff wasn’t keeping foods like sour cream, ranch dressing and cheese cold enough and they were keeping other foods in the coolers without proper covers.

At Naopli’s in Van Alstyne, refrigeration was also a problem. The report said the inspector noted a prep table that contained pepperoni, cheese, salami and cream with an internal temperature of 62 degrees. It should be kept at 41 degrees or below, the inspection report noted. The food was discarded.

The report said the owner reported that the table was accidentally unplugged overnight. The report also noted a molded pan of chicken wing sauce that had to be discarded and a pan of pasta that was out of date. Many food items were observed being stored uncovered in the coolers. The report also showed that the inspector found raw shell eggs being stored above items like pasta and chicken wings. Raw shell eggs should always be stored on the bottom shelf, the inspection report stated. The report also noted that there wasn’t any sanitizing solution in the kitchen area when the inspection took place.
