Sherman Police said a mother and her 3-year-old child were the victims of an aggravated robbery early Wednesday morning after a male suspect reportedly threatened the woman with a gun and fled with her purse.

Sgt. Brett Mullen said the incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. in the parking lot of Railside Crossfit, which is located in the 900 block of North Broughton Street. Mullen said the woman arrived at the gym with her child and was exiting the vehicle when the suspect appeared.

“She was approached by a black male, wearing all black clothing, with his face covered,” Mullen said. “He displayed a silver firearm and asked her for all of her stuff. He stole her purse and then fled on foot.”

The woman and her child were not injured and no shots were fired, Mullen said. The Sherman Police sergeant said no arrest had been made as of Wednesday afternoon and he did not have additional details regarding the suspect’s physical description.

Mullen said it is generally safest for victims of a robbery to comply with demands, and added they should only fight back if they believe their lives may be in imminent danger.

“Try to park in well lit areas, whenever possible,” Mullen said. “Try to be around people in public places. Having a buddy or somebody with you is also a good way to deter these types of crimes.”
