The college school year has ended and the grade school year is coming to a close, which means that it is time for outdoor fun. There will be several opportunities to get outside and enjoy the warm weather this weekend. From Denison’s annual dog festival to a wine event for adults, Denison will have a range of events for area residents and visitors on Saturday. Sherman will also have a fishing event for children and a fundraiser for the local community center. It’s also time again for Fight Night 2018. Here are five activities taking place in Sherman and Denison this weekend.
1. Auction and dinner
Texoma Community Center in Sherman will be hosting its fourth annual fundraiser, “Blue Jeans and Bling” on Friday evening. The event will give people the opportunity to dust off their cowboy boots and hats and get ready for some line dancing. The event includes a catered dinner, cake walk and silent auction. It will benefit the center’s adult specialized female outpatient program, as well as the adolescent outpatient treatment program slated to open this summer. The event will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Kidd Key Auditorium. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blue-jeans-and-bling-tickets-43484785163?aff=efbevent. Limited tickets will be available at the door.

Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., area residents and guests can visit Heritage Park in Denison for all kinds of dog related activities. There will be races, vendor booths, a fun run and awards ceremony, entertainment, a blessing of the dogs, contests and more. The races include wiener dog races and small dog races. Contests include a human/dog look-alike contest, best dressed in beach bash theme, retrieving contests, obstacle contests, most talented, most obedient, tail wagging, biggest and littlest dog, and ugliest and oldest dog contests. A parade will also be held. Registration for information and a list of events can be found at Denisonlive.com.
3. 21 and over only
For the first time, the Denison Arts Council will have a special wine event called “Admire, Walk and Wine.” Starting Saturday at 6 p.m., individuals 21 and over can venture through downtown Denison for the event. Local artists, restaurateurs and musicians will be sharing their art with attendees in many of the popular downtown retail stores while they stroll from store to store sipping wine and enjoying the great variety of art on display. For $10, patrons will receive a wristband, a souvenir wine glass and four tasting tickets. Domestic and imported wines will be available. The event ends at 9 p.m.
4. Sanctioned boxing
Benefiting North Texas Youth Connection, the North Texas Young Professionals will be putting on Fight Night 2018 Saturday evening. This sanctioned boxing tournament will begin at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Denison. A full mob style dinner with a cash bar will be available for attendees. A live DJ will provide music all night long. For more information, visit NorthTexasYoungPros.org.
5. Free fishing for children
The Refuge Rocks program for children ages 4-16 will be on fishing this weekend. “Let’s go Fishing” will be held Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman. For this free event, the refuge will provide poles and bait for program attendees, but you may also bring your own. Youth and parents can fish on the first pond on the right on Refuge Road. There will also be some fishy craft for children to complete. A parent or other responsible adult must accompany children. Bring a container to carry your catch home. Sturdy shoes, hats, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended, as well as lawn chairs or blankets. You may bring a picnic lunch and non-alcoholic beverages. The refuge asks that there be no glass containers. No advance registration needed for this event.
