A Sam Rayburn High School senior was killed early Monday morning after his vehicle veered off FM 273 and crashed into an abandoned house.

Texas Department of Public Safety Staff Sgt. Mark Tackett said Caleb Stevens, 18, of Ivanhoe, was traveling along the roadway, near Honey Grove, in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup at 2:15 a.m. when his truck left the roadway near the intersection with County Road 2020.

“He was driving on the roadway and lost control of his vehicle,” Tackett said. “(The vehicle) went into the ditch, traveled through the ditch into an open field, then drove across County Road 2020 and collided with a residence.”

Tackett said Stevens was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Stevens was transported to Texoma Medical Center Bonham Hospital with severe injuries. He was pronounced dead an hour later. Tackett said he did not have information regarding Stevens’ rate of speed at the time of the crash or whether drugs and alcohol may have played any role in the wreck.

Sam Rayburn High School Principal Wendy Keeton said Stevens was well liked among students and staff at the school. Stevens would have received his high school diploma on May 25.

“He could light up the room when he walked in with his smile,” Keeton said. “He was a very sweet, respectful young man.”

Tackett said the crash remains under investigation.
