Grayson County elected officials are mourning one of their own this week with the death of Dorothy Lee Harper Stroud.

Stroud, 95, was the elected Grayson County Treasurer from 1971 to 1987 and she died Tuesday at Stone Brook Assisted Living in Denison.

She worked at the Grayson County courthouse for 34 years, starting in the Tax Office in 1952 and working there for three years. She later worked in the Auditor's Office as a bookkeeper for 15 years. Then in 1970, she ran for the Grayson County Treasurer position.

Virginia Hughes, who succeeded Stroud as County Treasurer, said Stroud, “had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great person to work for.” Hughes worked for Stroud for seven years before Stroud retired.

An online obituary shows that she was born on September 16, 1922, in Savoy, to Clarence B. Harper and Minnie Blair Harper. Dorothy graduated from Savoy High School in 1940. She married Clifford Stroud on December 27, 1944, in Durant, Oklahoma. They were married for 53 years until his death on July 26, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Mullican Little Funeral Home in Bells. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Mickey Wagoner. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy.
