Organizers of the Second Annual Battle of the Ax Trash-off are encouraging members of the Sherman and Denison communities to take part in the event Saturday.
The trash-collecting competition is open to the public and is sponsored by Keep Sherman Beautiful and Keep Denison Beautiful. Participants will meet at Gateway Village, near the Hilton Garden Inn, where they will receive their routes and supplies. Teams and participants are asked to report to the starting location at 8 a.m. The competition begins at 9 a.m. and ends at approximately 11 a.m. Participants will return to the Hilton Garden Inn for free T-shirts and free hot dogs. The city with the most trash bags at the end of the competition wins and will receive an ax made from recycled materials.
“Yes it’s a competition, but are there really any losers?” City of Denison Director of Community Engagement Sunny Mackey said. “If we can get the trash out of the places we live, we’ve been successful in our goal of giving back to the community.”
Mackey said participants will be given brightly colored safety vests, gloves and trash bags, but also encouraged volunteers to dress warmly for the cooler weather. For additional information, call Sunny Mackey at 903-465-2720 or message Keep Sherman Beautiful through the group’s Facebook Page.
