Sherman was recently honored for excellence in financial reporting for the 30th straight year.

The City Council recognized Sherman’s Finance Department for receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for the 30th consecutive year. The award was given for the city’s comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

Director of Finance Mary Lawrence thanked the council and City Manager Robby Hefton for their support of the department.

“It truly starts at the top and it’s a tone that’s set,” Lawrence said. “We want to report things correctly and so it’s really a process that goes on throughout the year. For the past two years though, Tammy Davis has taken ownership for the audit and just done a great job — done legwork and leadership and gotten the finance staff to do everything they need to do. Really the credit goes to Tammy and the finance staff.”

The award is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. In a document prepared for the council, city staff said its attainment represents a “significant accomplishment” by the city and its management.

The city’s comprehensive annual financial report was judged to demonstrate a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to communicate Sherman’s financial story.

City staff said the recognition speaks well of Sherman, its Finance Department and all departments with a role in the financial reporting process. Lawrence also thanked Adami Lindsey & Co., the external audit firm, that worked with the city on the audit.

Sherman Mayor David Plyler congratulated Lawrence on the recognition and called it a “great award.”
