Grayson College’s 21st annual Miller Barber Golf Tournament benefiting the Grayson College Foundation raised more than $10,000 this year.

First place in the tournament went to Team Bono, which included Jim Bono, Kyle Bono, Kevin Fairbrother and Chris Shumaker. The tournament was held at the Tanglewood Golf Course in Pottsboro Monday with teams comprised of four players.

Grayson College President Jeremy McMillen said participants are already excited for next year’s event.

“People were already asking for the date of next year’s event,” McMillen said. “It will be on Columbus day again next year and we are really looking forward to it. I feel like it was a great day in terms of having people come out and enjoy each other and celebrate the opportunities we provide to the students through scholarships. We appreciate everyone who came out.”

Director of Marketing and Public Information at Grayson College Amy Evans said the college is still working on a preliminary total for dollars raised by the event.

“They don’t have an exact amount,” Evans said. “But we can say with confidence that it raised more than $10,000.”

All proceeds benefit the Grayson College Foundation which provides general scholarships for incoming students. The college distributed nearly 500 scholarships totaling around $580,000 last year.

The Grayson College Foundation was created in the late 1990s as a multi-function entity to raise money for the college. In addition to grant writing and its annual scholarship campaign, the foundation has recently added an official alumni association. Alumni will be invited for an open house in the spring to see the changes and improvements on campus.

Team Dannel took second place with the four man team of Charles Dannel, John Audas, Mickey Horn and Walt Butterworth. The CableOne team of Kenny Walker, Shane Hill, Joey Guess and Cole Kimberling followed close behind in third place.
