The Sherman Economic Development Corp. is getting a new board member.
During its meeting Monday evening, the Sherman City Council appointed Workforce Solutions Texoma Executive Director Janie Bates to a one-year term on the SEDCO board of directors and reappointed board members Tom Shields and Brad Douglass to new one-year terms on the board.
Bates said she is looking forward to joining the board as Workforce Solutions has long worked with SEDCO.
“We provide labor market information for them frequently when they have a prospect coming to town, so I believe what I can bring to the board is that perspective from the employment side,” Bates said. “And when you get down to it, we serve the same customers as SEDCO. We serve employers, and if we can help the current and the future employers, then that’s the goal of both of our organizations. I think it’s a very good fit for us to be there.”
The motion to appoint Bates and reappoint Shields and Douglass was made by council member Terrence Steele, who serves as an ex officio member of the SEDCO board and works as technology manager for Workforce Solutions Texoma. Steele will soon be exiting his nonvoting position on the SEDCO board as he decided not to seek re-election to his council seat and his term will end in November.
Bates’ appointment fills the vacancy left by the recent resignation of Willie Steele from his position on the SEDCO board after he was appointed to a seat on the Sherman council. Willie Steele was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the council’s at-large, Place 1 seat through the upcoming Nov. 7 special election after former council member Kevin Couch resigned to run for the District 62 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
Willie Steele subsequently filed to run in the special election to fill the at-large, Place 1 council seat, as did Sherman entrepreneur Ronald Rose.
