A Denison man who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on a felon in possession of a firearm charge has a new attorney in the state charge of murder he still faces in Grayson County.
Jordan Ballard retained Richardson attorney Larry Jarrett. Sherman attorney Bob Jarvis, a former Grayson County District Attorney, handled Ballard’s federal case and asked to be removed from the state case at Ballard’s last hearing before Judge Jim Fallon.
Jarrett will now try to help his client avoid a lengthy prison sentence on the charge of murder. Ballard shot and killed Justyn Simmons, 26, outside a residence in Denison on April 21, 2015. During the federal court proceedings held late last year, Ballard admitted to shooting Mr. Simmons, but said it was in self-defense.
Though he has signed on to defend Ballard in the state murder case, Jarrett said he is not representing the young man in his appeal of the federal sentence.
State Bar of Texas records show that Jarrett received his law degree from Howard University in 1983. He has been admitted to practice before both the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Northern District of Texas.
