A Denison man, who was recently sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on a felon in possession of a gun charge, appeared in state court Friday and decided to switch attorneys.
Jordan Ballard hired Bob Jarvis in April of 2015 after he had been involved in a shooting in Denison that left Justyn Simmons, 26, dead.
Jarvis also represented Ballard on federal charges of felon in possession of a firearm.
On Friday, Jarvis filed paperwork to withdraw as Ballard's attorney on the state charge of felony murder in Mr. Simmons' death. Ballard also faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and assault family member with previous conviction charges in state court.
State District Judge Jim Fallon asked Ballard if it was his decision to part ways with this attorney, and Ballard answered that it was.
There is a plea conference set in the case for Jan. 20. Fallon asked Ballard if it was his intent to hire a new attorney and Ballard said that is his intent. If he does hire a new attorney, that could cause the plea conference date to be pushed back a bit.
