MICHAEL GLEN BROYLES

1943-2023

Michael Glen Broyles passed away peacefully Feb 3 at Silver Leaf Assisted Living in Denison TX after a long illness. Mike was born on Jan 6, 1943 i n Reed City Michigan. He was the son of Hulen G Broyles and Inez Harris Broyles. Mike grew up in Gladewater and Winnsboro TX and then moved to Sulphur Springs to finish high school. He was voted Texas All-State Honorable Mention Quarterback his senior year in 1961 and excelled and lettered in every sport they offered. Mike went on to attend Baylor University where he lettered in football. Mike married the former Gail Blackburne of Sulphur Springs in 1964 and they were married for 58 yrs.

Mike finished college at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) with a degree in Business Management. He worked at H.D. Lee Mfg in Sulphur Springs and then was transferred to Florence and Russellville, Alabama, to open and start new Lee plants. He was hired as Manager by Levi-Strauss in Denison in 1973. He purchased Castleberry Florist in Denison in the ‘80’s.

Mike was a member of Waples United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, Denison Rod and Gun Country Club, the Lions Club, Denison Chamber of Commerce, Denison Booster Club, The Texas National Guard, served on the Denison City Council, 2001-2007 and Mayor Pro-Tem 2004-2005. He was inducted into the Sulphur Springs Hall of Honor in 2010 for his excellence in sports.

Mike never met a stranger and had a heart of gold, a wonderful dry sense of humor, and many close friends, old and new. He spent much of his time helping and visiting people that needed help and were alone. Most of them he knew but some he didn’t.

Mike is survived by his wife, Gail, his sons, Geoffrey Blackburne Broyles of Dallas, and Matthew Glen Broyles of McKinney, grandson Justin Thomas Vlier of Dallas, sister Donna Rudzik and husband Joe of Sulphur Springs, niece, Susannah and Jay Price of Sulphur Springs, nephew Michael Rudzik and wife Deborah of Bentonville, Arkansas, and sister-in-law Noel Blackburne Welch and husband, Fred of McKinney, and his two constant companions, Gus and Slinky.

The family wants to especially thank Dr. Mackie Watkins, John Bullard of Guardian Home Hospice and staff, and his wonderful caregivers at Silver Leaf Assisted Living: Stacy, Brenda and Rudo who gave him the most wonderful loving care. We are forever grateful.

Services will be held Thursday, Feb 9 at 2:00 at Waples United Methodist Church in Denison and graveside services will be Friday, Feb 10 at 2:00 at The City Cemetery in Sulphur Springs.
