Mary Jane Swindle

Mary Jane Swindle, age 93, passed away peacefully October 6, 2022. She was born April 14, 1929, to Charles Parker Shearin and Marguerite (Huckaby) Shearin. Mary Jane lived her childhood in Van Alstyne, Texas. As a youth she was a member of the First Baptist Church Van Alstyne and after marriage joined the First United Methodist Church in Sherman.

Mary Jane graduated from Van Alstyne High School and first attended Austin College. She completed her bachelor’s degree in science from Texas Women’s College in Denton (now called Texas Women’s University). After graduation she taught in the Tom Bean school system for four years.

She is predeceased by her husband, Joe Mac Swindle, whom she married March 29, 1952, in the Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton. She is survived by her son, Mark Christopher Swindle and wife Jane Elizabeth Swindle; two grandchildren, Mason Kyle Swindle and Laura McKenzie Swindle Enriquez and husband David Enriquez; two great grandchildren, Max and Miles Enriquez; son-in-law, Rick Hemingway; sister, Billie Nell Norris; two nieces and one nephew. Mary Jane was predeceased by daughter, Margaret Susan Hemingway.

One of Mary Jane’s favorite commitments was the seven years she served in the Sherman Service League. As a part of the Service League, she particularly enjoyed and participated in the delivery of meals to the elderly. She remained a financial contributor to various “Meals on Wheels” programs after her service in the Service League.

In her younger years Mary Jane was actively involved in church activities. Together, she and Joe Mac, were dedicated to daily exercise, including walking and swimming. The enjoyed traveling whenever they had the opportunity.

The family accepts Mary Jane’s death as a sad loss to the family and she and Joe Mac loved and were important role models to their children.

The family would like to thank Guardian Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Mary Jane in her final days. We would have been lost without their guidance and expertise.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, October 12th at Waldo Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:00PM. Graveside service will immediately follow at West Hill Cemetery.
