The Sherman Police Department have released information related to an incident that took place in the city early Sunday morning. In a news release issued Monday afternoon, the department detailed the incident that led to the arrest of one individual who is believed to have been behind a theft of property incident that turned into more.

“On Sunday 09-21-2025 at 9:33am, a Sherman Police Officer was on routine patrol when he was flagged down in the 2900-block of North Highway 75,” the release said. “The officer was informed a male suspect had stolen property from the victim’s vehicle just minutes earlier. The stolen items included a purse, backpack, and camera.”

Police observed surveillance footage and saw the theft take place.

“A suspect description was obtained, and it was determined the individual was staying at a nearby hotel,” the release said. “As officers approached the location, the suspect fled into a wooded area nearby.

“Multiple officers pursued the suspect through the woods and arrested him in the 2900-block North Highway 75. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Kendrick McGee Jr., a convicted felon.”

Police also made additional discoveries in the hotel room.

“Following his arrest, officers discovered McGee left three small children unsupervised in the hotel room,” the release said. “A stolen firearm was later located in the same room where the children had been left. The children were safely released to family members.

“Officers also recovered some of the initial victim’s stolen property inside the hotel room. A second firearm, also reported stolen, was recovered during the investigation. Both firearms were reported stolen from separate agencies.”

The suspect was arrested for the on-view offenses of theft of property under $2,500 with two or more previous convictions, tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair, evading arrest/detention with previous conviction, three counts of abandoning/endangering a child without intent to return, failure to identify as a fugitive – giving false information, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and fraudulent use/possession of identifying information more than 10 but less than 50 items.
