Dove Day Thursday

Dove Day Thursday

In conjunction with Light Up a Life, the Home Hospice Auxiliary of Grayson County will observe Dove Day this Thursday. Donations for doves for the Home Hospice tree will be accepted from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Kelly Square in Sherman. The goal is to place 200 doves on the tree on Dove Day.

The doves may be inscribed and hung on the tree or may be given to individuals in acknowledgement of the donation in their name or that of a loved one. The tree will be on display at Kelly Square throughout December.

Second Saturday program

Dr. Wayne Meyer will present the Second Saturday program this week at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The 10 a.m. program will be held in the refuge’s Visitor Center and is free and open to the public.

Meyer, an associate professor of biology at Austin College, will give a slide presentation on winter waterfowl at Hagerman. After the program, two TAPS buses will be on hand for those who want to take a guided tour to see the geese and ducks. No reservations are needed to attend.

Geese have been arriving at the refuge over the past few weeks and will spend the winter months there. The flock is currently estimated to be at 10,000. In addition, a number of different duck species are wintering at the refuge, including Northern Pintails, Northern Shovelers, Buffleheads, Green-winged Teal and more.

The refuge is located at 6465 Refuge Road in Sherman on the Big Mineral arm of Lake Texoma. The phone number is 903-786-2826.
