A Broadway favorite will be making appearances in Texoma this month. “West Side Story,” a more modern take on Romeo and Juliet, will be showing this month at Butterfield Stage in Gainesville.

Tickets are currently on sale for the production to show June 20-23 and June 27-30. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and matinees start at 2:30 p.m.

“The passion and rebellion of West Side Story still lingers today,” a news release from Butterfield Stage said. “The musical, which is an interpretation of Romeo & Juliet told through the eyes of warring teenage gangs, debuted on Broadway in 1957, and continues to feel fresh with every revival and tour. The innovative show shifted the way musicals were staged, breaking apart rules of choreography and storytelling. One of its most thrilling contributions, however, are the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, who had his big break with the show’s success and went on to write some of theater’s most challenging, moving and iconic pieces.”

The show includes ballads, up-tempo songs, and dance sequences. The book was written by Arthur Laurents and the score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

Alfred Weser, of Butterfield, will be directing the show.

“Director Alfred Weser and his team of more than twenty assistants has assembled an all-star cast with over thirty two members who dance, act, sing, and recreate the moments now etched in history of great Broadway productions,” the release said. “Musical Director Susan Higgins and Choreographer Stephanie Stoffel’s bring the cast together for an exciting, explosive presentation. Butterfields own Sheldon Ledbetter creates the most complex set, lighting, and sound ever on the Main Stage which will bring this production to life right before the audience eyes.”
