Trends from the last half-century, like wide-leg cropped jeans, denim jackets and scrunchies have taken over stores for the 2019 fashion season.
Old trends made new, Grayson County residents should already be seeing some familiar items when shopping for spring clothing.
“From coats and blouses, to pants and menswear-inspired blazers, there are countless ways to wear the fall/winter necessity,” Macy’s Media Manager Lauren Vocelle says via email.
Due to Grayson County being on the outer edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, trends seem to show up here slightly later than they do in more populated cities. But during this past year, bits and pieces of returning fashion trends have appeared in Texoma, just as they have in other areas.
People are beginning to stray away from skinny jeans, instead returning the 90s essential items like wide-legged, flared or straight jeans to their closets. Even the plaid trousers — most associated with 80s attire — are making an appearance.
“Fall/winter 2018, Macy’s saw a modernized plaid which became a prominent print this season,” Vocelle’s email continues. “We saw it mixed with florals, colors and also bedazzled with sequins.”
A raw hem on jeans has also been a popular trend this past year. While it may have been popular with shorts and bell-bottom jeans from the 70s, the raw hem has found new life with the current generation as well as with mainstream designers.
Denim skirts have become a go-to item for high-fashion models, taking the form of minis and pencils, and denim jackets have become an essential to closets once again as well. With all these denim trends returning, it is no surprise that the term “Canadian tuxedo” has become relevant again.
With Lake Texoma being a big part of Grayson County, swimsuit trends are definitely noticeable and important to the area.
“Other popular 80s-inspired trends were the high-waisted bikinis and neon options,” Vocelle says.
Though the style is befitting for certain audiences, Macy’s most sought after swimming items are a little different.
“Macy’s customers were falling for the high-cut one piece making its comeback,” Vocelle explains.
Other items making comebacks are shoulder pads, patchwork denim, velvet pants, blazers, jumpsuits and fanny packs, proving that history does in fact repeat itself. So if you are looking for the next hot item for 2019, be sure to check your closet first — you may have had the right idea 20-40 years ago.
