Area Veterans Day celebrations have already begun. With a weekend filled with commemorations, remembrances and acknowledgements, Texoma is full of weekend activities for families of veterans and civilians. Piner Middle School kicks off the weekend with a program Friday. Then on Saturday, Sherman will host its first Veterans Day parade in many year and Denison will have its annual parade Saturday afternoon. Perrin Air Force Base is also having a series of events recognizing Armistice Day. Here are five events to kick off Veterans Day weekend.

1. Celebration

Piner Middle School is inviting current and former U.S. military members, as well as guests to Kidd-Key Auditorium, Friday for its annual celebration. The event begins at 10 a.m. and there will be performances by students in the fine arts department at the school. Guest speakers include veterans Tom Caver and Fred Freeman. After the program, there will be a reception for veterans and family members.

2. Parades all around

For the first time in more than 30 years, the city of Sherman will have a Veterans Day parade. The march will begin at 11 a.m. in downtown with participants from all over North Texas. After the parade, many downtown businesses will have offerings for veterans. For more information, visit The annual downtown Denison Veterans Day parade will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The parade often includes the Denison marching band, members of all military branches, military vehicles and more. For more information, visit

3. Fishy, fish, fish

The second Saturday program at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Sherman will be on fish this month. The program will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. and will be taught by Southeastern Oklahoma State University Fisheries and Wildlife Science Professor Tim Patton. He will talk about black bass, sand bass, small mouth bass, catfish and more. The program is free.

4. Do it for the kids

The Pottsboro Kids Club is looking to raise some money this weekend. The annual That Dam Lake Texoma 5K Run will be held from 9-10 a.m. Saturday. The race begins at the Denison Dam located at FM 1310 in Denison. Register at “For the Kids” is a chip-timed 5K run beginning at the East Burns Run recreation area in Oklahoma and concluding at the boat ramp parking lot in Texas. Registration and shuttle van pickup are at the finish line in Texas. This is a flat course.

5. All weekend long

Perrin Air Force Base Museum has been preparing an exhibit all year long in preparation of Armistice Day this weekend. It will be honoring the day with events taking place Friday through Monday at 426 McCullum Ave., in Denison. On Friday, a Choctaw code talkers presentation will be held at 11 a.m. and an evening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. with an art walk, World War I exhibit and tours. On Saturday, there will be an open house and an event for veterans organizations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then Sunday, the museum will host an 8 a.m. sunrise service with the color guard present, a bugle player, bag pipe player, chaplain and Jeeps on site. For Monday, there will be an open house, guided tours and hourly videos from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
