In 2017, the annual fundraiser, Bras for a Cause, brought in around $150,000 for Women Rock and after Saturday’s eighth installment of the event, the breast cancer support group hopes that they will have another $150,000 to help fund diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds and physician referrals.
The 2018 event will be held from 6-11 p.m. Saturday at Rafter D Hangar at North Texas Regional Airport. Tickets are $75 per person.
“Bras for a Cause is always our biggest event for the year, and we always raise the most funds for the year at this event,” Women Rock Founder and Director LuAnn Daniel said. “We expect to have about 750 there that night.”
This year’s event will include live and silent auctions and entertainment. Food will be provided by Denison Golf and Country Club.
Also at the event, male volunteers will be modeling bras decorated by event sponsors.
“The brothers, sons and dads … this kind of brings it home to a lot of them,” Daniel said in 2017. “A lot of the men that are going to be on stage have some kind of connection to breast cancer. A bra is just a bra for most people, but when you decorate it and put a man in it, it becomes a symbol of hope for other women.”
Daniel said this event is also important because men sometimes get lost in the whole shuffle of breast cancer.
“One of the models has been doing this with us for six years,” Daniel said. “We also have several others who come back year after year. We like to have some new ones as well so that there are different people each year.”
The event — which sells out every year — honors cancer survivors who are months past treatment as well as years past treatment.
“Some of the survivors that will be on stage are 15-year cancer survivors,” Daniel said.
Along with providing funds to individuals for testing, Women Rock also helps women manage breast cancer treatment and assists with recovery.
“Grayson County has a high number of women currently affected by breast cancer and breast cancer survivors,” Becca Boss said in 2017. “It is important for people to support breast cancer awareness because there is no cure. We want to reach out to the community and let them know that we are here. We also want to spread awareness for the disease. It is so important that women and men check themselves regularly.”
The organization also provides information about breast cancer.
“We have a lot of local friends, family, and coworkers,” Daniel said about how the community views the event that raises money that stays in the community. “They get to see the purpose behind being a sponsor for this event. It is a fun event. We honor and recognize women we know.”
