It is Earth Day weekend and Earth Day Texoma has organized a festival in celebration of the holiday dedicated to preservation and conservation of the Earth’s natural resources. Along with the Saturday festival, area residents and visitors have the opportunity to attend a play written and produced by locals, participate in 5Ks to benefit area organizations, and attend the monthly children’s program at Hagerman. There will also be a book sale benefiting the Friends of the Sherman Public Library. Here are five events for Earth Day weekend.

1. A play for actors

For local drama-lovers, Amy Shojai and Frank Steel wrote and produced the show, “STARZ, the Musical.” The show opened at The Rialto Theater in Sherman on Thursday and will continue showing at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The show is about the ups and downs actors face in preparing for the stage. Ticket prices range from $10-$15 for the shows at the theater, at 424 W. Main St., Denison.

2. Fun run

A weekend of 5Ks starts with the Denison Independent School District’s “5K for Kindness” which begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Denison High School. There will be fresh hot dogs, a bounce house and slide, and more for children. Door prizes will also be given out. Register at Also, the “Heels for Heroes 5K & Fun Run” benefiting VFW Post 4852 will be held from 8-11 a.m. Saturday at the Fannin County Multi-Purpose Complex, 700 Texas 56, Bonham. 3. Reducing your footprint

Earth Day Texoma will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in Lucy Kidd-Key Park in Sherman. The festival is themed “Reduce Your Footprint” and the keynote speaker is Phoenix Commotion’s Dan Phillips. The entertainment headliner is Oliver White and he will take the stage at noon. This is the 10th year this event has been held. There will be children’s activities and a children’s art show, sponsored by the Sherman Youth Arts Initiative Program. The Ghost Town Arts Collective will have a sculpture installation made from recycled materials and host an exhibit at its gallery located at 101 E. Jones St. in Sherman. 4. Sale. Sale. Sale.

The Sherman Public Library will be having its spring book sale this weekend. To be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hope on Houston, 901 E. Houston, Sherman, individuals can purchase books and media for all ages at the low cost of 25 cents to $1 per item. 5. Oh Deer

The monthly children’s program at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge this month will be on deer. “Oh Deer” will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman. Children will learn deer facts as well as participate in an activity about the mammals. This event is free for children.
