Jean Hughes of Pottsboro, TX, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Texoma Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Jean was born on November 9, 1929, in Hagerman, Texas to parents, Howard and Opal Seat-Shires. Jean grew up in Hagerman and graduated from Denison High School. She married Delbert Hughes on March 1, 1947. They worked together at Lingo Leeper Hardware Store in Pottsboro, where he was the manager, and she was the bookkeeper. In 1964, she was the second employee hired at the original Sears store in Sherman. Jean worked in the Auditing Dept. and was the Manager for the Catalog Dept. She retired in 1991. Her early retirement allowed her to travel from Boston to Las Vegas and many places in between with her sisters several times. There were also many shopping trips, vacations and parades with her son and daughters and their families.
Jean was a member of First Baptist Church of Pottsboro. She enjoyed working on genealogy and sharing that history with others. She also loved telling stories about the history of Hagerman and the Katy Railroad as her family roots ran deep in both. She loved spending time with her family.
Jean is survived by her daughters: Brenda Garrett Christman (the late Jim Christman), Donna (Jim) White, Lou Ann (Randy) Walson; son-in-law, Roy Garrett, and her brother, Bob (Pat) Shires; granddaughters: Amy (Jeff) Householder, Sunny (Nick) Mackey, Jessica (Josh) McKinney, Emily Perkins; grandson: Aaron (Lacy) Walson. She also had (17) great-grandchildren and one (1) great-great grandson and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Hughes; son, Ronnie Hughes; parents, sisters: Johnnie (Bill) Gibson, Dorothy (John) Scibek, Beverly Gastineau, and infant sister Barbara Shires; brother: Joe Shires; and son-in-law, Jim Christman.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Fisher Funeral Home with her nephew, David P. Gibson officiating and music by Wade Kilgore. Interment will follow at Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro, Texas. Family night will be Friday, February 17, 2023, from 6 p.m. 7 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home, 604 W. Main, Denison, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Roy Garrett, Jeff Householder, Nick Mackey, Josh McKinney, Shawn Ramsey, and Aaron Walson. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Walson and Jim White.
