GC Sheriff takes accountability for firearm discharge incident

This weekend, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office released information related to an incident involving Grayson County Sheriff Tony Bennie while on a trip in Georgia this past weekend. In the statement from the office, Bennie is taking accountability in an incident involving a juvenile firing Bennie’s firearm.

“As someone who has spent his career promoting public safety, I take this incident very seriously,” said Sheriff Bennie. “I made a mistake. It was unintentional, but it was still a mistake — and one I own fully. I am thankful no one was injured, and I hope this serves as a reminder to all gun owners about the importance of constant vigilance, especially around children.”

The incident took place June 7 at a Wendy’s in Covington, Georgia.

“While traveling out of state and visiting with family, Sheriff Bennie entered the restroom of the restaurant where he removed his holstered firearm from his belt,” the release about the incident said. “Due to distractions Sheriff Bennie unintentionally left the firearm behind upon exiting the restroom. A short time later, a 15-year-old juvenile entered the same restroom, located the unsecured weapon, and during handling, the firearm discharged. Thankfully, no one was injured.”

The local police were notified about the incident, who the firearm belonged to and the individual involved.

“The Covington Police Department conducted a full and thorough investigation and consulted with the Newton County District Attorney’s Office,” the release said. “Their findings determined that there was no criminal intent or criminal negligence under Georgia law, and no charges will be filed.”

The release was issued by Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brad Oliver ahead of Bennie’s return to the region.

“Sheriff Bennie has expressed deep personal regret and takes full responsibility for this lapse in judgment,” the release said. “He has also expressed his profound gratitude that no one was harmed and has committed to using this incident as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of firearm safety.”

The Sheriff’s Office also took the time provide information about safe gun ownership.

“This incident underscores a vital truth: even seasoned professionals are not immune to moments of human error. It also reinforces the importance of following key firearm safety practices at all times:

“Keep firearms secured and within your control.

“Never leave a firearm unattended, even for a moment.

“Talk to children about dangers of firearms and what to do if they encounter one.”

This statement, GCSO said, was released in an effort to provide transparency to the public and confidence in the department’s ability to remain transparent.

“At the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, we remain committed to accountability transparency, and public safety,” the release said. “Sheriff Bennie will continue to lead this office with the same dedication and integrity that has defined his career. WE hope this incident reinforces a culture of safety, humility, and continuous learning — values that are central to who we are as a law enforcement agency.”
