For children, summertime is winding down. Still there are many opportunities to get out with the family and enjoy what Texoma has to offer. This weekend is no different. There are a slew of activities for children and families to enjoy from Friday through Sunday. Here are five family-friendly events for the first weekend of August.

1. Magic of the Night benefit

The Sherman Community Players will have its annual dinner theater fundraiser Aug. 3-12 at the Finley Theater in Sherman. Patrons will receive a three-course meal and see a presentation created by Director Anthony Nelson and magician Rudy Reynoso. Tickets are $45. To purchase, call 903-893-7652 and leave a message. 2. Take a hike

Meet at the Rock Creek Marina in Gordonville on Saturday for a day hike, picnic and swimming on the Cross Timbers Trail. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. They will then shuttle a few cars with people to the start of the hike at Cedar Bayou Marina. The hike will be at least seven miles. At Rock Creek Marina, the group will jump in the lake and will eat lunch. Bring your own lunch then stay as long as you want after the hike to fish, kayak or float on the water. Bring lots of water.

3. Butterflies

Go to Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Sherman on Saturday to participate in the butterfly garden walk. The first third and fifth Saturdays, the garden docent are on site to help individuals identify the Texas native plants and butterflies in the garden. Patrons have access to the refuge’s close-focus binoculars. There will also be family activities available like scavenger hunts and an opportunity to meet the metamorphosis puppet. Access to the butterfly garden is free and open to the public during refuge hours which are from sunrise for sunset.

4. Back-to-school

Area organizations want to help parents with back-to-school preparations. St. Stephens Episcopal Church will be offering free eye screenings, dental screenings, and more on Saturday. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at the church located at 401 S. Crockett in Sherman. It is open to all students in Grayson County. On Sunday, 4 His Glory Ministries will have a backpack giveaway at 2627 N. Loy Lake Road in Sherman. The event will be held from 2-4 p.m. and the child must be present to receive a backpack.

5. Toys and more toys

If you do not mind a short drive down US Highway 75 this weekend, a trip to the North Dallas Toy Show may make for a fun-filled Saturday afternoon. There will be more than 90 vendor tables along with toys and collectibles from brands like Hot Wheels, Transformers, Matchbox cars, and DC and Marvel comics. Admission is $2 and children 11 and younger get in free. This event is held the first Saturday of every month at the Dallas Event Center, 4343 Sigma Road, Suite 600, Farmers Branch. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
