A Denison motel has lost its certificate of occupancy following multiple safety issues and concerns. On Friday, the city announced that it has revoked the certificate of occupancy for the Denison Inn, also known as Texoma Inn, effectively forcing the motel to close.
“The safety of our community is our top priority,” Denison Fire Marshal Harlan Owens said in a news release. “This facility failed to maintain basic safety standards, placing the occupants at risk. It will remain closed until every hazard is corrected and compliance with current city ordinances, codes, and safety standards are verified.”
The decision follows inspections by multiple city officials, including representatives for the fire marshal’s office, building officials, and Denison Code Compliance. During these inspections, multiple safety issues were discovered related to the electrical, plumbing and sanitation systems.
The violations cited by the city in its decision to close the facility include non-functioning and improperly installed smoke alarms and inadequate fire alarms. The electrical systems of the facility were also cited for violations that ranged from exposed wiring to corrosion found on utility conduits. An unidentified black growth was found in multiple areas of the motel and laundry facilities were found to be unsanitary with open sewer lines and visible contamination.
In a news release, Denison said it has been in contact with the owners of the property and are discussing the necessary steps needed in order to reopen and be in compliance with city regulations. City officials described Friday’s action as an isolated move, but officials did not rule out the possibility of further enforcement on other motels if violations are reported.
