Cold front, cooler temperatures expected next week

As October approaches, Texoma could see a reprieve from the Texas heat this week. The National Weather Service has forecast a brief warm up before a cold front drops temperatures into the low 80s sometime next week.

Temperatures are expected to remain mostly dry, with low chances of rain on Saturday, and daytime highs rising into the low 90s.

“Temperatures are going to remain pretty steady in the low 90s this weekend and early next week,” meteorologist Madi Gordon said Friday from the NWS Fort Worth field office.

Forecasts remain uncertain, but a cold front is expected to enter the region sometime next week and drop temperatures into the low 80s by the end of the week. The system will also bring in some instability that could lead to disturbances and periodic rain chances by the end of the week.

Gordon said there do not appear to be strong signs of significant weather, but forecasts are still early, and meteorologists should be able to get a more accurate prediction in the days to come.

Despite the lack of rain in recent weeks, the Texas Water Development Board classified Grayson County as drought free in its latest water report. This week’s report found that 19 percent of the state, down from 20 percent a week ago, remains in some form of drought. In recent weeks, areas of “abnormally dry” conditions have begun to appear across the state, including areas of the panhandle and Central Texas.

“The latest drought map for conditions as of September 9 shows the smallest area of drought in almost four years,” Hydrologist Mark Wentzel said in the latest report. “However, more than a quarter of the state has become abnormally dry and susceptible to falling into drought in the next few weeks.”
