BELLS — Landan Morse had to wait until the district portion of the schedule had already started before he could play the first game of his senior season. Expected to be a key piece both at shortstop and on the mound, the Panthers standout stayed busy — and ready — for the moment he would be healthy enough to get on the field.

VA baseball rallies; Gunter clinches

SANGER — Dakota Howard was 3- for-5, drove in a run and scored twice as Van Alstyne rallied for a 9-6 victory in nine innings against Sanger in District 9-4A play. Riley Dancer tripled, drove in two and earned the win in relief, Luke Juarez singled, walked three times, drove in two and scored twice, Blake Skipworth was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Weston Johnson singled and drove in two for Van Alstyne (12-5, 2-4), which trailed 4-0 going into the sixth inning.

A grand old time

It was not the start the Sherman Bearcats wanted to the end the first half of district play. Down by three runs and without a base runner through two and a half innings, one swing changed everything.

Sherman softball and Denison baseball win

Ava Gibson’s grand slam propelled the Sherman Lady Bearcats to a 5-1 victory over McKinney North at home in District 10-5A action. Madison Jarvis allowed an unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks and singled, walked and drove in a run while Ally Baker singled, walked and scored and Marissa Wells and Addey Kuhn both singled and scored for Sherman (7-16, 3-6), which travels to rival Denison on Friday night.

WHITEWRIGHT — Four of the final five games on Whitewright’s schedule involve teams immediately surrounding the Lady Tigers in the district standings as five teams are set to battle for four spots down the stretch.
