McKINNEY — Canaan Farley Jr. allowed a run on three hits in six innings with 10 strikeouts and four walks and was 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Denison Yellow Jackets won their fifth straight game with a 4-1 victory over McKinney North in District 10-5A action.
Libby Cernero was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI, including a walkoff, two-run single to lift the Sherman Lady Bearcats to a 5-4 victory over Wylie East in District 10-5A action. Bailey Miller was 2-for-3 with a double, drove in a run and scored twice, Madison Jarvis was 2-for-3 and Ava Gibson allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks and singled, walked and scored for Sherman (8-19, 4-9), which ends its season at Princeton on Friday.
GUNTER — It seemed ironic that Gunter catcher Hayden Fox couldn’t handle wearing a mask. As a four-year starter she’s never stepped on the field without one.
VAN ALSTYNE — The first third of district play didn’t go at all how the Panthers had hoped as they sat winless at the bottom of the standings. Now riding a four-game winning streak, Van Alstyne is hoping to continue its winning ways over the final third to lock down a playoff spot.
VALLEY VIEW — Greyson Ledbetter did not allow an earned run on two hits while striking out 13 and walking four in six innings and going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs as second-place Whitesboro beat Valley View, 10-2, to clinch a playoff spot in District 10-3A action.
WHITEWRIGHT — Skylar Pogue was 3-for-4 with a triple, walked, drove in three and scored twice as Gunter clinched the outright District 11-3A title with an 11-2 victory against second-place Whitewright.
Chris Oestreich is making the move back up Highway 75 to a place where he’s very familiar as he returns to Texoma after he was hired to be Denison’s head boys basketball coach. He had a 12-year run at Austin College starting in the mid-90s and saw the other side of the Sherman-Denison rivalry when his son, Spencer, was an all-region player for the Bearcats before graduating in 2006.
As the seventh inning approached, Owen Ewton knew what was at stake — both for his team and the performance he was trying to finish off. The Denison right-hander had only 10 throws remaining until hitting the pitch count limit that would force the junior from the game and he was just three outs from a no-hitter.
Ashlinn Hamilton launched a 3-0 pitch over the centerfield wall with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the third-place Denison Lady Yellow Jackets a 3-2 walk-off victory against first-place Prosper Rock Hill in District 10-5A action.
