Letter to the editor: Guardrails do not prevent accidents

On a 50 mile trip, you’ll save 7.2 minutes if you increase your speed from 75 to 84 MPH. So you’ll arrive at your destination a few minutes sooner…if you’re lucky enough to arrive at all. It might be safer next time to leave your house 7 minutes earlier. Excessive speed accounts for approximately ⅓ of roadway accidents, and wet streets account for 85% of weather-related accidents, according to the Tx Department of Insurance (TDI). The TDI also reported that in 2023, a motor vehicle accident was reported every 56 seconds, over 500,000 for that year in Texas alone. Speed and distracted driving explained 2/3rds of those accidents.
