DR. J. MICHAEL BENSON

Dr. J. Michael Benson passed away peacefully at his home of nearly fortyfour years on May 26, 2023. As he always desired, he worked until he could no longer do so. Indeed, he last saw patients on Tuesday, May 2 before being diagnosed with esophageal cancer just two days later. Mike was born in San Angelo, Texas on May 20, 1948 to humble, loving parents Joe and Alleen Benson. His childhood was marked by spending time outdoors with family, including hunting and fishing. He attended San Angelo Central High School, where he began dating his future wife Marsha Spencer during his sophomore year. Mike played football at Central and graduated as salutatorian.

SUZANNE JOHNSON CAIN

Suzanne Johnson Cain, 87, of Sherman, Texas passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the T. Boone Pickens Faith Presbyterian Care Center in Dallas, Texas. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 30th at the pavilion of Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Joe Ed Goolsby officiating. Pallbearers include grandsons Blake Cain, Chase Cain, Charles Cain, Lukas Cain, Landon Cain, Weston Cain. Honorary pallbearers are grandson Hudson Cain, and greatgrandsons Gage Smith and Graham Cain. A Celebration of Life for Suzanne Cain will be held the following week on Friday, June 9, 2023 from 6-8 pm in Binkley Hall at First United Methodist Church, Sherman, Texas. Suzanne was born November 29, 1935 to Dorothy and Frank Johnson of Houston, Texas. Some of her fondest memories of her early years growing up in Houston include playing outside on the shell streets in her Bellaire neighborhood, catching crawdads along the canals and studying ballet from a world-renowned instructor. The family moved to Gainesville, Texas in the 40’s where she enjoyed riding her horse, became the first female lifeguard for the Gainesville Swimming Pool and graduated from Gainesville High School in 1954. She pursued a degree from North Texas State College where she had her first date with Billy Cain at a school dance. Suzanne graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and began her teaching career in West Texas. Soon after, Suzanne and Bill were engaged and married on June 29, 1957. They began raising their family and establishing valued friendships across Texas, first in Gainesville and seven other towns throughout Bill’s 41-year professional journey with Texas Power & Light Company. During that time, she earned a Master’s in Education from NTSU, and was a substitute teacher in local schools as well as a certified Red Cross swimming instructor.
