LORNA COMBS

Lorna Jewell Combs of Pottsboro, Texas, passed away on June 13, 2023, at the age of 86. She was born on November 9, 1936, in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Joseph Lesley and Hattie Jewell (Gillham) Riggle. Lorna was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a lady of many talents. Earlier in life, she was a machinist at Cessna and was the only female within that company. She was also a truck driver alongside her husband, Virgil. She was a faithful Christian and was a member at Lakeway United Methodist Church in Pottsboro, Texas. Lorna was an avid reader, piano player, and quilter. Lorna loved her family deeply and will be missed by all who knew her. Lorna is survived by her seven children, David Combs and wife Sharon of Wills Point, Texas, Donald Combs of Pottsboro, Texas, Virgil Combs Jr. of Pottsboro, Texas, Chris Combs and wife Leann of Tyler, Texas, Steve Combs and wife Tammie of Josephine, Texas, Teresa Dean and husband Joseph of Texas, and Matthew Combs and wife Brenda of Payne, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Alysha Kennedy, Jimmy Coffey, Sara Combs, Joseph Dean, Amanda Ratchford, Zack Dean, Steven Combs, Dillen Dean, Lyndsay Cekander, and Amber Webb; fifteen great grandchildren; three brothers, David Riggle and wife Kay, Patrick Riggle and wife Julia, and Timothy Riggle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorna was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Chester Combs Sr., two children, Kent Richard Combs and Jewell Coffey; her parents; son-in-law, Jimmy (Bo) Coffey; and four siblings, Leslie Riggle, Bill Riggle, Richard Riggle, and Mike Riggle. A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M., Friday, June 16, 2023, at Lakeway United Methodist Church, 15015 TX-289, Pottsboro, Texas 75076. HELEN JONES

Helen Ruth Holder Jones, age 88, passed away June 8, 2023, at Beacon Hill in Denison, Texas. She was preceded in death by William (Bill), her beloved husband of 43 years; daughter Susan Booher; son-in-law Sam Donald; son David Jones; and shortly thereafter by greatgrandson Jasper Kennelley. Born April 28, 1935, and raised in Waco, Texas, Helen lived in Georgia, California, Clarksville, Texas, and later Dallas, Texas, before settling in Sherman, Texas. She spent her adult life working as a bookkeeper for several local industries, the Texas Employment Commission, Johnson and Johnson, and Clifton & Jackson, CPA. She learned to play the organ when she was young. She worked at an organ store, where she not only learned how to play an organ, but also how to play by ear. She would always try to play the piano or organ when she was attending church. After retiring, she traveled across the country with Bill, was active in her community, and spent her days at home studying her Bible, painting, sewing, crocheting, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. She was a strong, Christian woman who loved the Lord, and was active in her church; teaching Sunday School, volunteering at the local food and clothing banks, and any other ministry that needed her. Helen was loved by all who knew her. She leaves behind her children; David and Angela Dean, Paula and Mike Parker, Tony and Heather Dean, Rex and Glenda Booher, Terrell Jones, Richard and Jeannette Jones, Jodi Jones-Donald; 27 grandchildren, 43 greatgrandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many beloved friends. Carol “Janice” Griswold, 70, of Sherman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 14th after a brief illness. She was with her loving husband of 52 years, Leroy Griswold, and son Glenn Griswold at the time she passed. Janice was born on January 9, 1953, to Bill and Mary Spencer in Denison, TX. In 1970, she met the love of her life Leroy Griswold, and they wed in 1971, going on to have two children, Victor and Glenn. When Janice had Victor, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Janice excelled at supporting Victor and Glenn and being there for them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Whether it was supporting her children through difficulty or through their personal successes, she made it her mission to improve the lives of others. After attending school for nursing, Janice served those in need at Hilltop Haven for many years a job she was always passionate about and cared deeply for. Janice was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Mary Spencer, her bother Bobby Spencer and her sister Judy Waw. She is survived by her sister Billie Gouge of Denison, children Victor of Dallas, Glenn and daughter-in-law Amanda of Sherman, Grandsons Ty and Dylan, her granddaughter Katie Hedges and her husband Klayton Hedges of Weatherford. MARTHA ROUIN

Martha Rouin, long time resident of Hammondsport, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 19, 2023, at Cayuga Medical Center. She was a World War II veteran, as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Born in 1920 in Jamaica Plain, Mass. (Boston area) to Dr. Raymond Titus and Mary Titus, she attended Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill and went on to study at Smith College in North Hampton, where she received a Bachelors in Art History in 1943. Following college, she entered the Woman’s Army Corps and was stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J. She was in charge of setting up and managing a nursing unit at Fort Monmouth, where she served until the end of the war effort. After the war, she met and married Marcel “Bud” Rouin in New York City. Bud, a Hammondsport native, also served in the war, as a half-track gunner with the Third Armored Division, landing in France following the D-Day invasion, and fighting the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. Martha and Bud moved to Hammondsport in 1966, where they raised their two sons, both Navy Veterans. Martha worked as a social worker for Steuben County - in which capacity she served hundreds of children and families - and Bud was a portrait, landscape and wildlife artist. Martha was also a talented artist in her own right, best known for her clever, and often humorous, sketches and caricatures. Additionally, her photographic submissions at the annual Hammondsport Art Show garnered her several awards. She and Bud were members of Penn Yan Art Guild. She also was a long-time lector at St. Gabriel’s church in Hammondsport and enjoyed singing in the Finger Lakes Chorus. In retirement, Martha served as a volunteer for numerous organizations, including the Glenn Curtiss Museum, Hammondsport Library and as a nursing ombudsman. Lois Etchieson Bell, born on June 29, 1925, to Reverend William Ross and Gertrude Davis in Sunkist, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at Texoma Medical Center on June 9, 2023. Lois, a long time Cartwright, Oklahoma resident, was in convenience store management for 50 years, retiring at age 93. Lois was preceded in death by husbands Roy C. BETTY MARR

Betty Dean Marr, 92 years old, of Sherman, passed peacefully from this life, Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Denison. She was born January 1, 1931, in Leonard, Tx. Her parents were Roy F. and Mary A. (Murrell) Roberts. Betty was a 1950 graduate of Sherman High School. On July 3, 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, Clyde U. Marr in Sherman. They were married for 63 years. She owned and operated Marr Delivery Service for many years. Her interests included shopping at estate sales for antique collectables, sharing the history of Grayson County and of Leonard, Texas, line dancing with her senior citizens group at the SNAP Center, keeping in touch with her classmates the class of Sherman High School 1950 and spending time with her family. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary Roberts; husband, Clyde Marr; and a sister, Merle Reynolds of Mt Vernon, Tx. She is survived by her son, Larry Marr, and wife Brenda of Sherman; daughter, Melody Harris, and husband Tim of Sherman; granddaughter, Gina Marr Hiemstra, and husband Tim of Vallejo, Ca; grandson, Colin Harris, and his wife Ashley of Sherman; granddaughter, Lauren Edwards, and husband Justin of Sherman and 6 great-granchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 14, at Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Waldo Funeral Home. Rev. Paulette Schwarz, her first cousin, will officiate. The burial will be at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman. Pallbearers will be Colin Harris, Nevin Marr, Steve Melton, James Pierce, Gayle Adcock and Justin Edwards.

Martha Margaret Ereckson passed away June 6, 2023, in Savoy, Texas at the age of 85. She was born to Houston and Margaret (Williams) Hogge on June 2, 1938, in Parker, Texas. Martha married her loving husband Sam, on May 29, 1956, in Parker, Texas. They were married for 67 years. Martha was employed by Hilltop Nursing Home for ten years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Gunter, Texas. She is survived by her husband, Samuel Stewart Ereckson; daughters, Stacye Herod and husband, Robert and Julie Cole and husband, Charles; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
