Texas high school students slightly improve on some standardized tests — but haven’t fully regained ground since the pandemic

After the COVID-19 pandemic’s education disruptions caused Texas students’ standardized test scores to drop, their performance is beginning to turn around toward pre-pandemic levels in three subject areas, according to test results released Thursday by the Texas Education Agency.

Texas History Minute: John Watson shaped colleges across the South

“A good man is always learning,” is an old Latin Proverb. Sages and thinkers since the days of the first schools thousands of years ago have recognized the importance of education in shaping and informing the minds of students from their earliest lessons and throughout their lives. Leaders of schools and colleges play a special role in developing the culture of a learning community. One such education leader, native Texan John Brown Watson, became an important figure in shaping colleges across the South.

Bryan County History: Boys in the band

In the late 1890s a group of young men known as “Teddy’s Terrors” wandered the streets of Caddo, Indian Territory. Thankfully their goal was to make music rather than mayhem. Their director and sponsor was Prof. W. H. Wheeler, a talented musician and the father of Clarence Wheeler, who played the piano, violin, and mandolin. In 1894 the band included: Pete Bloom, E flat cornet; Arch Russell, E flat cornet; Dick Grayson, B flat cornet; Jim Council, B flat cornet; Charles Manning, 1st alto; Frank Lawrence, 2nd alto; Jim Sims, 1st tenor; Ira Smith, B baritone; E. G. Lloyd, B tuba; R. E. Burkes, bass drum; Henry Richards, snare drum.

One fourth of traffic deaths caused by drunken drivers

Analicia Zarate of Edinburg was four years old when she and her mom were headed home from church on a Sunday night. A drunk driver ran a stop sign and hit their car, killing Analicia’s mom instantly. More than 20 years have passed since that tragic night, but the pain endures. “All I remember is being buckled into a car seat and waking up in a hospital a week later,” Zarate said. “My mother died in the crash. I was four.”
