Dear Neil: I have two live oak trees in my front yard. Both were damaged by the February 2021 cold. One of them looks really bad in its lower trunk. Is it “doomed?” It is as green as normal at the top. It’s about 50 years old. What should I do? See photos attached.
We have plenty of experience dealing with drought and not enough water, however, we do not normally have to deal with too much water. A big problem with all the rain is that I get all the weeds pulled, it rains, and I have more and different weeds. There are weeds this spring that I have never seen before. I have the biggest, healthiest, most prolific, dandelions, prostrate spurge, and Asiatic Dayflowers (not a flower but an aggressive weed) than I have ever had before. They probably floated in on the runoff from so much rain. At least they are easy to pull and hoe since the soil is so moist.
With the notorious summer heat creeping back in, horse owners may begin to worry about the sores their equine friends can develop during the scorching season.
