When it comes to starting a statin, it’s not all in the numbers

Dear Dr. Roach: I have a question for your column. What is the number of LDL cholesterol that would necessitate taking statins? I am an active 51-year-old female and weigh 126 pounds at 5 feet, 2 inches tall. I eat a healthy diet and avoid trans fat. My total cholesterol is 260, LDL is 173 and HDL is 67. I have had high LDL since I was a teenager. My blood pressure is 123/77. My general practitioner prescribed a low-dose statin (Crestor 5 mg). My cardiologist said that statins will lower my cholesterol but that it does not ensure I will be protected from a heart attack or stroke.

I celebrate being a mom every day, so I give little thought to Mother’s Day. However, my mother is fond of the holiday, and since I respect her and her choices, I try to do something for or with my mom each year for Mother’s Day. As it turned out, this year she and I spent a fun afternoon together a day early, leaving the actual holiday free for my brother to spend time with our mom.

Downton Abbey: A New Era is what you’d expect, for better and for worse

Grab your monocles and teapots, the Downton Abbey gang is back! The 2019 film Downton Abbey proved to be a lucrative enough enterprise to ensure that a sequel was inevitable. Now the whole gang’s back, from the servants to the countess’s and everyone in between. A review of this sequel can be summed up aptly by saying that if you liked the first movie, this one’s bound to tickle your fancy. If the original Downton Abbey wasn’t your cup of tea, well, this sequel won’t change your mind. This is not a follow-up looking to convert the uninitiated or use the goodwill of its predecessor to try out some bold new ideas. Downton Abbey: A New Era is all too content to go down a familiar path, which will probably suit Downton Abbey devotees just fine.
