SGLY: One of the kind

During a recent exam, my general practitioner suggested I take mid-morning and afternoon breaks instead of working straight through the day. “Get out of your chair,” she said. “Change your view. Go for a walk. Move. Stretch. Do something different.”

The next invasive garden threat? A slithering, jumping worm

Just when you think you’ve become accustomed to the spotted lanternfly invasion, along comes another menace to the ecosystem: the Asian jumping worm. Allow me to introduce you to Amynthas agrestis, also known as “Alabama jumper,” “Jersey wriggler” and the rude-but-accurate “crazy worm.” Unlike garden-variety earthworms, these flipping, thrashing, invasive miscreants are ravenous consumers of humus, the rich, organic, essential top layer of soil formed by dead and decaying small animals, insects and leaf litter in places like forests, plant nurseries and your garden.

Woman fears ex-husband has turned daughter against her

Dear Abby: I was married for more than 40 years. My ex constantly badmouths me to everyone. He got to our grown daughter early during our separation, and it’s clear to me she has sided with him. He’s a very intelligent narcissist who manipulates people and they’re not even aware of it. Our divorce took three different lawyers and cost me thousands, which was his intention. I also have a thyroid gland disorder, and I’m taking daily medication treatments for both my thyroid and heart. Over 20 years ago, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and have had no long-lasting side effects from the illness. My primary doctor gave me the OK to get a seasonal flu shot three years ago. But, recently, an urgent care doctor strongly recommended that I should never get a flu shot.

Decade-long high lymphocyte count isn’t cause for concern

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a female and almost 75 years old. My vital signs are always normal, and I am active, but slightly overweight. I get quarterly blood draws, and every reading is in the normal range except for the lymphocytes. That count is higher, just outside the normal range (the lab’s range is 850 to 3,900 cells/uL, and my absolute lymphocytes are 4,377 cells/uL).
