Middle-aged daughter hasn’t left the nest

Dear Abby: My husband passed away two years ago. I hope you can give me some advice on how to deal with my 53-year-old daughter who never left home. We generally get along well. She does freelance art, but doesn’t earn much. She contributes only $30 a month. Also, she has a driving phobia, so she doesn’t drive. She expects me to drive her to various places.

Moments with the Minister: Anniversaries

Anniversaries can tell us interesting things. A couple celebrates their 3 or 5-year mark of being together. It’s easy enough to tell by their giddy togetherness that they’re still fairly new at this. By the time some reach their 35th or 45th anniversary, it may be possible to see that they have faced some of life’s weightier challenges: buying a home, raising children, seeing one another through health crises. There may be questions about whether they will both be around to celebrate a 50th oreven60thanniversary. What shows in the lines of their faces are the hard-earned joys they’ve known, as well as the sorrows they’ve seen each through. It tells you something of the character of who they are, as well as something of where they are headed. Endurance points us toward the hope that is love’s blossom.
