Psychiatrist won’t give up a patient’s list of medications

Dear Dr. Roach: My sister has asked her psychiatrist for a list of the medications she has been on during the past few years. She would like to try a new one, as she is crying constantly and seems disoriented. He won’t explore changing meds and also won’t give her the list, claiming he hasn’t got the time. Isn’t it illegal not to give her this information? Who should she contact in the state of New York? I am very worried. This does not seem professional.

Family history of breast cancer prompts man to get examined

Dear Dr. Roach: My mother and both of her sisters had breast cancer in their 30s, with my mother eventually passing after her third bout at age 43. They all grew up in the same house that I grew up in. I’m now a 34-year-old father of three small children. I don’t want to die early because of them, but the generalized advice I’m seeing is that I don’t need a cancer screen until my 40s.

Friendship with doctor’s wife puts patient in a tough spot

Our families celebrated holidays and special occasions together. However, over the course of our friendship, Nina shared many details about their personal lives with me. They are now separated.

Gift Ideas for Gardeners

Gardeners are some of the easiest people to please with a gift whether it is for a special occasion like Christmas or any other occasion. I like the idea of homemade gifts because they are unique, personalized, and a labor of love. What a great way to spend time making a thoughtful gardening gift when it’s too cold to work in the garden. It’s also a great way to get friends, family, and children together to work on gifts. When it comes to gift-giving, it really is the thought that counts whether you buy or make a gardening-related gift, and this is the perfect time to get gifts ready for Christmas especially since it’s going to be too cold to do anything outside. Below are some suggestions for gifts for gardeners.

Gardener’s mailbag: Did we waste money our money?

Dear Neil: We applied the pre-emergent as you recommended last spring. It helped a great deal with this year’s lawn through the summer (until the drought). We intended to apply it again two weeks before the average date of the first killing freeze this fall, as per your book, but we had an early first freeze and never got it down until recently. Have we wasted our money?

Woman accosted after church for saying things she didn’t

Dear Abby: A friend, “Marie,” approached me in the parking lot after church, raising her voice, flailing her arms and saying three people had told her that I told them to stay away from her and her husband. I told Marie it wasn’t true, and she and her husband were my friends. She reiterated that three people said it, shaking her hand and holding up three fingers in my face.
