Area student win big at stock show

Several Van Alstyne students took part in the 2023 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo on January 21, and three took home big prizes in their respective show events. Caitlyn Rasor, a FFA member from Van Alstyne captured Senior Champion Female with WHR HC Mona Lisa Perfection 1104 ET in the Shorthorn Junior Heifer Show.

Bothersome transparent floater remains in the eye

Dear Dr. Roach: I have a transparent floater in one eye that stays in the same general area. I went to an optometrist who dilated and took retinal photos of that eye, and they saw nothing. They just told me if I started seeing “curtains, light flashes, changes” to return. Nothing different has occurred yet. My brother swears that eating fresh pineapple daily worked for him. What are your professional thoughts on this “cure”?

Pretty but toxic: Watch toddlers around these houseplants

When visiting friends or family who have both houseplants and young children, I’ve been compared to “Aunt Bonnie” from the Geico commercial “Aunt Infestation.” In it, a young couple who just moved into a new home complains of having pests — not ants but overbearing “aunts.” Like the one who declares the condiments in their refrigerator to be “Expired! Expired! Expired!,” I invariably invade room after room of my hosts’ homes exclaiming, “Toxic! Toxic! Toxic!” I’m pointing out houseplants that should be kept out of kids’ mouths. And I don’t mind dashing friends’ hopes of an Instagram-worthy indoor jungle if it means potentially preventing harm.
