The Dark Skies

This morning I walked out to hug and say goodbye to my shortleaf pine trees ( Pinus echinata). The yellow southern pines are among the most drought-tolerant, living in dry rocky or sandy soils on hillsides, in ravines or precariously perched on bluffs. These eastern Oklahoma trees wanted a little more water and acid soil, not the sorry organic poor alkaline earth where they grow. The topsoil removed during building years ago left a dense clay layer that supports prairie grasses and a few hardy oaks.

Moments with the Minister: The true color of love

Do you sometimes struggle with the question of ‘true love?’ Does it really exist somewhere other than the Hallmark Channel on TV? Those couples that seem to be so happy together- are they secretly enduring each other for the sake of pride, for the children, for fear of being alone, or because separation might impose a financial burden? And, if finding true love depends on a successful roll of the dice, you might be tempted to avoid the risk of giving yourself to love, fearing the pain of disappointment.

SGLY: Another snow

This is my second snow since living in my new place. The floorplan remains the same, as do many of the decorations. Yet, I feel different, with less anxiety and more anticipation. So much has changed between the first and second snow; over a year has passed, but in the moments that have gone, I have gained much. I am thankful. Even in the worst, my soul has endured in peace. I know full well that this peace only comes from Christ Jesus, as I am too frail to keep such a steady stance in life’s torrent. And in this knowing, joy accompanies me because I know Christ is with me. Each day gifted is a reminder of whom I am living for.
