Doctor takes patient off lifelong medication due to insurance

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a 61-year-old male, and I’m currently taking medication for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis (a blood clot in my right leg). I was prescribed Coumadin. After taking Coumadin for six months (I never could get the number right), I went to the emergency room, and the doctor there said that the Coumadin wasn’t working. So, he prescribed Eliquis. He told me that I would be taking a blood thinner for the rest of my life.

Proton therapy serves as another option for prostate cancer

Dear Dr. Roach: My husband had surgery the first time he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Five years later, he had a recurrence. We investigated his options and decided to go with the proton therapy. I am surprised you did not suggest this treatment in your recent column about prostate cancer. He had no further recurrences and recommended it to others who had good experiences and outcomes.

In Scotland you play “Hunt the Gowk Day” (gowk means fool), in Spain and France paper fish are taped onto unsuspecting people’s backs and in Portugal they throw flour at you. In the US, England and Germany are trotted out outrageous but believable stories. What have you planned for April Fool’s Day? A big spider drawn on the toilet paper roll? Just an idea.
