Mush, Mush….Mushrooms

Yellow Wart, Yellow Patches, or Yellow Dust Amanita. The Amanita flavoconia mushrooms are very common east of the Rocky Mountains. They surface late spring to early summer after rains. The cap is orange- yellow with small yellowish flaky patches. The stem is white to light yellow and the base ends in a small bulb. The spore print is white. To identify this schroom, look for bits of powdery universal veil still attached to the base of the stem.

Chili cook off for the children

Among many other things, May was National Foster Care Month, and earlier last month some area folks held a chili cookoff at 903 Brewers in Sherman to benefit the Grayson County Child Welfare Board. The event raised about $20,000 with business sponsorships, tasting tickets, and auctions.

Going green in the garden

The best way to garden green is to work with Mother Nature as much as possible. The weather is always controlling everything about our gardening activities. Just in the last few years we have had some of the worst freezes in history and are still waiting to see if some of our plants will survive. In most years recently it has become the norm instead of abnormal where we go from winter to summer and skip right over springtime. That is so stressful on the plants, and they will need extra TLC to help them thrive. The following are suggestions for “going green” in our gardens.
