Sherman ISD Supports Families of Students with Special Needs
SISD Every student has unique needs and goals. Sherman ISD is committed to helping all children thrive by supporting families with educational resources, guidance and connections to essential community services. This past week, SISD hosted an informational parent night on World Dyslexia Awareness Day (October 8). District dyslexia support providers shared insight on how dyslexia impacts students’ lives and how parents can help support them. “The best gift our dyslexia students can receive is time and patience, and these events are helpful because they provide eye-opening information and tools families can use,” said Kerry Bedgood, Sherman ISD Coordinator of 504, dyslexia and interventions. “We were able to guide families in hands-on activities to put themselves in their students’ shoes, which helped them better understand what their student may face on a day-to-day basis with dyslexia.” On October 28, SISD and regional partners will host the Connecting the Dots Expo, which connects students with disabilities and their families to valuable community resources. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sherman High School (2907 W. Travis St.) and will feature breakout sessions addressing different topics and disabilities. Vendors who provide specific services for special needs students and their families will also be present. RSVPs are encouraged at http://bit.ly/R10-CTD, but not required.
