Carl Ray Waltz

Carl Ray Waltz, 91, died August 19, 2022, at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX from complications during his recovery and rehab from his rescue in February following three days of being trapped in his house. Carl was born April 9, 1931, to his parents Allene Lois (Bush) Waltz (d.1979) and Leo John Waltz (d.1950) of Denison, TX. Carl is survived by his brother, Leo Francis Waltz (Mary Margaret Carlisle) of Webster, TX. Carl was married in 1982 to Lillian Zuercher (formerly Lillian Imparato & Coonrod) for a number of years, but some years after the divorce she died in 2012 in California where her son lived. After graduation from Denison High School, Carl started college at North Texas State Teachers College in Denton (now North Texas University). Upon the death of his father, Carl dropped out of college to assist in the family business, Chris Waltz Supply Company. The business was started by Carl’s grandfather, Christian Waltz* (d.1927), and was later owned by sons Leo John Waltz and Frank Hugo Waltz (d.1990). Frank was a

1 ⁄ 3 (silent) partner as he worked for the MKT Railroad as an office manager in Denison. Then when Leo John died in 1950, the business was operated by Allene Waltz and her son Carl at 201 W. Woodard, in the ground floor of the Woodmen of the World building. They then bought Frank Waltz’s interest. The business ran for years in that and previous locations until a fire started in the WOW hall on the 2nd floor, destroying the building. The business reopened at a location on South Woodlawn until it closed for good. Carl’s interests included coin collecting and geology and he participated in the local rock club and subscribed to publications like Prospecting and Mining Journal, and he even visited the Superstition Mountains, AZ, site of the Lost Dutchman (who was Jacob Waltz, no relation) Gold Mine. He studied nutritional supplements, body building, had master license in Electrical and Plumbing. His nickname in Denison sometimes was the “Professor”. Carl also worked on building his own boat in the garage. Family and friends will gather to visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2022, at Fisher Funeral Home.
