Body found after Red River drowning, Denison Fire Rescue reports

Denison Fire Rescue released information related to an event that took place Sunday evening at the Denison Dam. In the release, the department details its response to a drowning incident at the Red River near the Dam Sunday.

“Just after 6:20 p.m. Denison Fire Rescue responded to a child in the water of the Red River near the Denison Dam,” the release said. “Upon arrival, DFR crews utilized their swift water rescue boat and located the child who had already been rescued from the water by a family member.”

The release also said witnesses saw the child’s father jump into the water, but he was swept under the current. The father never resurfaced.

“DFR crews recovered the body from the river where he was pronounced deceased,” the release said.

 Search and rescue efforts were conducted by Denison Fire Rescue and Denison Police Department dive team, DFR shift members, Texas Game Wardens, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, and Corps of Engineer Park Rangers.

 “Both the child and his father were not wearing lift vests,” the release said. “It is important to state that if you’re going to be near water, wear a life vest and stay away from moving water.”
