DENISON – Benny Alan Elk passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Benny was born December 26, 1925 to Robert Charlie and Ina Lucille Blakey Elk in Dodd City, Texas. He attended Savoy High School and then served in the United States Army in WWll from 1944 to 1946 in Manilla. He returned and met the love of his life Louise Winkler and they married January 15, 1949, married 73 years. They had 4 children, CJ, Alan, Phillip and Rhonda. Benny and Louise worked hard to raise their children right and give them everything they needed and still try to help them to this day. Together they accomplished that and a great deal more. He worked at Safeway – Brookside plant close to 30 years, retiring in 1989.
Growing up he and his brothers hunted and fished in Red River a lot. They would try to outdo the other on who had the best garden. He took care of his mom’s big garden for years and whatever else she needed. He leveled and painted and did plumbing for most of the family when needed. He was a self-taught man. He was definitely a man of his word. If he told you he would do something he did it. Never expecting anything in return. He was always building something around the house out of brick or planting trees and he loved working in the yard and the garden. He had the best and biggest watermelons ever. He loved having the cleanest car in town and he did. He took pride in everything he did. He loved his family tremendously. After the loss of their son Phillip he started going to church and was baptized and became a member of Shannon Church of Christ where he attended for many years up until he couldn’t. He loved his church family and he and Louise took care of the church, inside and outside for many years too. They had a love and passion for helping others and they together shared a love like no other. They loved to go dancing with their friends and go on trips together. You never saw one without the other. She definitely spoiled him rotten. He was a hard working husband and wonderful father and he will be greatly missed by so many here but he has his sons, grandson and whole family waiting on his arrival now as he was the last man standing.
He was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Ina Elk, sons, Alan Ray Elk, Phillip Wayne Elk, grandson, Curtis Stephens Jr., sisters Edna Earle Panter and husband Ray Sampson, Lucille and Vernon Kumler, brothers, Robert (Bobby) Elk and wife Adeline, Harry Elk, Burney and Martha Elk, Jimmy and Anita Elk, son in laws: Nathan Meeks, Sparky Cox and Scott Stephens Sr., David Williams; in-laws: Alton and Paula Winkler, Ann and John Ray, Leon and Jean Hughes, Eugene (Smiley) Hensley, and Douglas Brooks.
