Viewer’s Choice Male Athlete of the Year: Collinsville’s Garrett Trevino

It was as good an ending to a high school career full of accolades as Garrett Trevino could have hoped for.

The Collinsville senior’s final moment was catching the last out to give the Pirates a second straight state championship after he had been given the nod as the starting pitcher in the Class 2A Division II title game.

Starring for the baseball team as well as on the football field, Trevino was selected as the Herald Democrat Readers’ Choice Male Athlete of the Year.

Trevino’s weekly honor by the voting public came at the end of district play when he went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and scored three runs against Dodd City and combined on a three-hit shutout against Tioga.

His ability to affect games at the plate and with his arm were part of the Pirates’ season-long success, capped by keeping the crown and going 31-4. His contribution as a middle of the order bat included an average over .300 and when handed the ball he produced a 12-1 record. In six playoff starts he allowed just three earned runs and struck out 26 in 31.1 innings.

Trevino took on the role as ace of the pitching staff after serving as the No. 3 starter/closer for the Pirates’ title-winning squad last season that went 40-3.

His role in the lineup hadn’t changed, although defensively he’s slid over from left to center when he wasn’t on the mound.

Trevino was named the Pitcher of the Year in 11-2A as he helped the Pirates to a fourth straight district title and a district winning streak of 56 games Collinsville will carry into next season. All-state voting had not yet taken place when this article was printed.

On the football field Trevino, who has been a four-year starter at linebacker, helped the Pirates reach the state quarterfinals in the past three seasons and losing to the eventual champion and finishing with 12-2 records each time.

As a senior he had 210 total tackles (127 solo), 23 for a loss, a sack, five quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. In his last three seasons he had at least 150 tackles every year.

He was a Texas Sports Writers Association first-team all-state selection after being third-team all-state as a junior and second-team all-state as a sophomore.

Trevino also had his most significant contributions on offense this past fall, running 100 times for 971 yards and 18 touchdowns to go with 15 catches for 180 yards and two scores and a 57-yard TD pass.
