After more than 22 years as the Fannin County Children’s Center’s Executive Director, Sandy Barber is retiring effective June 30. The board of directors and staff of the Children’s Center will also be hosting a Retirement Party for Barber on from 4:30-6 p.m.

Carol “Janice” Griswold, 70, of Sherman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 14th after a brief illness. She was with her loving husband of 52 years, Leroy Griswold, and son Glenn Griswold at the time she passed. Janice was born on January 9, 1953, to Bill and Mary Spencer in Denison, TX. In 1970, she met the love of her life Leroy Griswold, and they wed in 1971, going on to have two children, Victor and Glenn. When Janice had Victor, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Janice excelled at supporting Victor and Glenn and being there for them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Whether it was supporting her children through difficulty or through their personal successes, she made it her mission to improve the lives of others. After attending school for nursing, Janice served those in need at Hilltop Haven for many years a job she was always passionate about and cared deeply for. Janice was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Mary Spencer, her bother Bobby Spencer and her sister Judy Waw. She is survived by her sister Billie Gouge of Denison, children Victor of Dallas, Glenn and daughter-in-law Amanda of Sherman, Grandsons Ty and Dylan, her granddaughter Katie Hedges and her husband Klayton Hedges of Weatherford. Janice was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Hallie-Kate Hedges as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Helen Ruth Holder Jones, age 88, passed away June 8, 2023, at Beacon Hill in Denison, Texas. She was preceded in death by William (Bill), her beloved husband of 43 years; daughter Susan Booher; son-in-law Sam Donald; son David Jones; and shortly thereafter by greatgrandson Jasper Kennelley. Born April 28, 1935, and raised in Waco, Texas, Helen lived in Georgia, California, Clarksville, Texas, and later Dallas, Texas, before settling in Sherman, Texas. She spent her adult life working as a bookkeeper for several local industries, the Texas Employment Commission, Johnson and Johnson, and Clifton & Jackson, CPA. She learned to play the organ when she was young. She worked at an organ store, where she not only learned how to play an organ, but also how to play by ear. She would always try to play the piano or organ when she was attending church. After retiring, she traveled across the country with Bill, was active in her community, and spent her days at home studying her Bible, painting, sewing, crocheting, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. She was a strong, Christian woman who loved the Lord, and was active in her church; teaching Sunday School, volunteering at the local food and clothing banks, and any other ministry that needed her. Helen was loved by all who knew her. She leaves behind her children; David and Angela Dean, Paula and Mike Parker, Tony and Heather Dean, Rex and Glenda Booher, Terrell Jones, Richard and Jeannette Jones, Jodi Jones-Donald; 27 grandchildren, 43 greatgrandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many beloved friends. Lorna Jewell Combs of Pottsboro, Texas, passed away on June 13, 2023, at the age of 86. She was born on November 9, 1936, in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Joseph Lesley and Hattie Jewell (Gillham) Riggle. Lorna was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a lady of many talents. Earlier in life, she was a machinist at Cessna and was the only female within that company. She was also a truck driver alongside her husband, Virgil. She was a faithful Christian and was a member at Lakeway United Methodist Church in Pottsboro, Texas. Lorna was an avid reader, piano player, and quilter. Lorna loved her family deeply and will be missed by all who knew her. Lorna is survived by her seven children, David Combs and wife Sharon of Wills Point, Texas, Donald Combs of Pottsboro, Texas, Virgil Combs Jr. of Pottsboro, Texas, Chris Combs and wife Leann of Tyler, Texas, Steve Combs and wife Tammie of Josephine, Texas, Teresa Dean and husband Joseph of Texas, and Matthew Combs and wife Brenda of Payne, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Alysha Kennedy, Jimmy Coffey, Sara Combs, Joseph Dean, Amanda Ratchford, Zack Dean, Steven Combs, Dillen Dean, Lyndsay Cekander, and Amber Webb; fifteen great grandchildren; three brothers, David Riggle and wife Kay, Patrick Riggle and wife Julia, and Timothy Riggle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorna was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Chester Combs Sr., two children, Kent Richard Combs and Jewell Coffey; her parents; son-in-law, Jimmy (Bo) Coffey; and four siblings, Leslie Riggle, Bill Riggle, Richard Riggle, and Mike Riggle. A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M., Friday, June 16, 2023, at Lakeway United Methodist Church, 15015 TX-289, Pottsboro, Texas 75076. Goodness gracious it went and got hot around here. One minute it looked like spring might last a whole 30 days and the next we were looking at getting out those eggs to fry on the sidewalk.
