Texas’ shortage of mental health care professionals is getting worse

In 2016, the warnings about the future of the Texas mental health care workforce were clear. “More than 80 percent of Texas counties are designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas, which are defined as more than 30,000 residents per clinician,” the Texas Statewide Behavioral Health Strategic Plan stated seven years ago.

Cipro prescription is no longer the first-line treatment for UTIs

Dear Dr. Roach: I was diagnosed with a UTI on my yearly physical urinalysis, but had no symptoms. I was prescribed Cipro. The five pages of warnings attached to the prescription scared me! So, I checked the FDA and Mayo Clinic websites. Both said that the “risks outweigh benefits” and it “should not be first choice to treat UTI.” But my doctor says to take it, so I will -- 500 mg twice a day for seven days. Possible side effects include tendon ruptures (including the aorta), nerve damage and more. Scary! I am 71 and in good health, with high blood pressure as my only problem, but it’s under control.

TxDOT projects March 6-10

This week, Texas Department of Transportation crews will be along various roadways throughout Grayson and Fannin counties. From extending roadways to placing new traffic signs and doing debris pickups, a news release from TxDOT detailed the areas where crews will be working.
