Ten-year fracture risk determines need for osteoporosis meds

Dear Dr. Roach: I am 77 and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I am taking Fosamax and taking all the steps recommended for strengthening bones. But I have two questions: First, is it possible to avoid a fracture without taking medication. Second, is it necessary to avoid coffee completely? I am confused about both questions, having read a lot of conflicting information online. I recently finished reading a book that strongly condemned osteoporosis medication, and have also read that coffee is OK, even good for bones; though, other sources say it leeches calcium from bones. I would appreciate some clarity on these issues.

TxDOT projects for the week ahead

Here’s a look at work planned in Fannin and Grayson Counties for the week starting Nov. 7, 2022. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades, and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Fast-track healthcare career training offered on Van Alstyne campus with scholarship funding

Beginning in January 2023, the Grayson College Center for Workplace Learning (CWL) will offer non-credit, fast-track, healthcare-career training programs on the Grayson College south campus in Van Alstyne. Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) will be the first to start on January 17 at 5:30 pm, followed by Pharmacy Technician (PT) on January 30 at 5:30 pm. Scholarships valued up to $2,500 are available for Texas residents to attend and certify in these programs.
