With Abbott defeating O’Rourke, Democrats’ soul-searching should start on the border

Ten years ago, the thought of a Republican governor delivering a victory speech in McAllen, a few miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, would have been peculiar. Until recently, the Rio Grande Valley, an overwhelmingly Latino region, routinely gave Democrats comfortable double-digit electoral margins, even if they got mostly shellacked by Republicans elsewhere in Texas.

Arguably one of the most notorious convicted killers in Grayson County history could soon face the ultimate punishment rather soon. A death warrant declaring that Andre Thomas may be executed on April 5, 2023 was signed by Grayson County Clerk Kelly Ashmore on Nov.

Church leaders should obey the law regarding politics and the pulpit

Federal law says ministers can’t make partisan political pronouncements from the pulpit, but some church leaders in Texas and around the nation don’t seem to care. A ProPublica/Texas Tribune article described church leaders in Texas and other states skirting - or brazenly breaking - a 64-year-old law that prohibits houses of worship and other tax-exempt 501(c) (3) non-profit organizations from endorsing candidates.
